So many wonderful sessions, but some lodge in your mind permanently. This was one of those, and for me the only songs I have ever heard by this band. Play Away especially is a real favourite song of mine. It rings true, even in the chocolate eclairs bit. Really great and thanks for giving it a greater chance of eternity

I recorded this session in 1994 from the radio and still have it. Spike was clearly a very fine group, superb musicians and songwriters. I have often wondered what happened to them and why they didn’t take off. They seemed to have it all and were perfectly geared for the Britpop phenomenon. They should have gone far. If there’s more material recorded by them hidden away in a cupboard somewhere (on the show Peel mentions a demo tape), it should be dug out and released, but that probably won’t happen until Britpop becomes more collectable.
